What’s negative, self talk, costing you?
How much are you getting done, while you’re using negative self talk like,
- Have to
- Need to and
- Should.
Do these words make you feel motivated to get going on a task. Or do they conjure up feelings of dread? For me those words definitely, feel like dread. They give me no feelings, of getting motivated, and ready to take action, on a task that I already know that I have, need to and should do.
I have a better way of talking to yourself, to get you motivated, to start getting organized at home.
This will be fun, motivating, self talk
I saw a program on television the other night. The wilderness expert guy, had to enter a pen of seven wild boars, that had been earlier captured. The guy had to go in there, with the boars, and lasso them one by one, to tie them up, so that they could move them. Hard job right! Those boars are very aggressive, and to have that many in the pen at once, was, for them, very scary. He was deep breathing, getting ready to go in there, and you could tell he really was quite worried. The other guy, that was working with him, (he would be backing the main guy up, by covering him with a large piece of wood, to stop the hogs running up behind, the hog tie guy, and stopping them, harming him), finally said, “come on, this will be fun“. In they went, and I’ll tell you, they really had their work cut out, catching those huge hogs, without getting hurt.
Positive self talk, for motivation
The point I’m making here, is the self talk, they used to get motivated to do the job. “Come on, this will be fun”. Much more positive, and motivating, than saying, “oh, gee, this is going to be hard, and scary and dangerous. I hope, we don’t get attacked, I’m not really sure I wont to do this job. Those wild hogs can bite you and stick you with their huge tusks”. This mind-set, wouldn’t of helped any, in getting them motivated, to catch those huge wild hogs. Instead, they focused on, this will be fun. That’s the mind set that they entered that pen with. Consequently, they did have a few close shaves, but in the end, they got all the wild boar tied up.
Turn a negative into a positive
Now, sorting through some magazines, for five minutes, to get your home organized, doesn’t sound like such a huge job, does it? In fact it can also be a positive experience, so long as you change the way, that you talk to yourself about it.
When you walk by that three foot stack of magazines and newspapers, and you catch yourself saying,
“I need to sort through those”-
STOP- dead in your tracks and rewind that tape in your head.
Instead try this. Say to yourself instead,
“Oh good, I’ve got five spare minutes now, to sort through those magazines. I’ll then put some into the car, ready to take to the animal shelter”.
So then, did you notice the difference in the way those two phrases sounded. The first, I need to sort through those magazines. Sounded like a dreaded task didn’t it!
The other, Oh good, I’ve got five minutes to spare now, to sort through those magazines, sounded more like an opportunity. It was a motivational statement. Using motivational statements, will help you to get your home organized. It doesn’t matter, if it’s only in five minute intervals at a time. As long as you are consistent in your five minutes, a couple of times a day, every day, you will find yourself, getting organized. The more often you practice this motivational exercise, the more it will become a part of you.
