Pilates is an exercise that you can incorporate into your housework routine.
Doing pilates while doing housework in a sense kills two birds with one stone. You have to do your housework and by incorporating a pilates routine into the housework routine and doing them both at the same time, means that when the housework is finished, so is your Pilates exercise routine. The other way Pilates fits in to house work is that it strengthens your body making doing housework easier.
Pilates is good for everyone
Every person should do pilates because of the great results they can achieve for the little effort that needs to be put in. You can do pilates while waiting for the train, doing housework or sitting at your desk. You just need to be mindful of that fact and learn some simple exercises. Some of which I will be showing you in this post.
Every person can do pilates no matter what your age is or your fitness level. By starting out slowly and gently and taking on a pilates routine that you can do everyday to make into a habit your flexibility will inprove and you can start to work up in how long you spend doing it and how difficult a workout you choose to do. Their is a place to start for everyone no matter what your phisical capabilities are or how old you are. You just have to take the first step and start.
Famous Pilates Users
Lots of famous people use pilates in their fitness routines including Jennifer Anniston, It is known as the thinking exercise that helps your mind and body work together to distress, improve aches and pains and especially improve your posture. People who do pilates as a regular form of exercise in my opinion seem to develop the body type of a dancer. Because of good posture they look taller and more agile. Who wouldn’t want to look like that?

Resources:Pilates, simple routines for home, work and travel. by Alan Herdman with Jo Godfrey Wood.
Alan Herdman is a world-renowned Pilates expert, who was originally trained by Pilates teachers in New York.
You can learn Pilates by taking a class in your local neighborhood. Simply search for pilates classes, you can Google it right now if you like. Otherwise check out your local papers or phone the gyms in your area. Most gyms will have some pilates classes in their weekly schedule.
There are many great books available to teach you pilates routines as well as DVDs. The one I have recommended here comes with a workbook to help you keep track of your results.
[notice]Exercises like the one above, are able to be accomplised by doing Pilates, however, this position is for Yoga, which is more difficult initially than Pilates.[/notice]
Amazon for Pilates Workout Wear
Links: to Amazon, I have thoroughly looked through Amazon for all matter of equipment, cloths, books, DVDs, even kindles and iPods to help you get inspired, motivated and most of all help you in your technique for learning Pilates. The links provided are of the gear that I liked most in looks, customer feedback and most popular in amazon’s rankings. In each range I have also selected my favorite look that comes out at the least expensive, not over $25.00, so their is something here for everyone. (I may get a small commission for recommending these products if you do happen to purchase something. If that is the case any money I am making out of this site is going straight back into the site for improvements.)
The Gaiam balance ball chair
This is the number one ranked yoga/Pilates product in the Amazon Store. The reason for doing Yoga ball exercise is to train the core muscles in your torso, which will strengthen your abdominal muscles. The abdominal muscles help support your back and with using these muscles in turn will align your body and give you better posture. In using the ball with the chair, you need to keep centering yourself and that reminds you not to bend your shoulders forward or slouch. The chair and ball are bought separately. This offer from Amazon is currently the best price that I have ever seen the chair being sold for. I couldn’t more highly recommend it.
Pilates and the Gaiam Chair
What does the chair have to do with Pilates and Housework? Nothing really, but just think, you could start your pilates routine at your desk with your Gaiam balance ball chair, while your still working on your computer even while playing on your computer. That has to make good sense.

Pilates for housework
Bending, lifting, reaching and the push-pull action are the main actions required to do most housework types of motions. Doing these actions in a rush can easily cause you to injure yourself. You can use Pilates to make any of those movements far less potentially dangerous to yourself as well as strengthening and toning at the same time making the job far more enjoyable and benefiting you from the exercise.
Don’t Vacuum like this:
When you vacuum do not rush the job. You should use slow rhythmic strokes and never sharp aggressive ones. Your back should never be bent over and hunched as it can cause a drift away from the natural line of the body. Doing it with a hunched back your legs will be straight adding to the strain on your body.
Pilates and Vacuuming
When you vacuum make sure that you never bend your back over, or try and vacuum with stiff straight legs. Instead you should bend one knee and support the weight of your body on it. Don’t just move your arm but rather your whole body. Breathe in and out to push the vac away from you and back toward you. Pull your tummy muscles in as you breath in. When you need to vac under furniture squat down or bend one knee. Breathe in and as you push the wand head away from you breathe out and pull your stomach muscles in as you pull the attachment back toward you once again.
Ironing
If your are feeling tired it is better to lower the board and sit to iron than to slouch. Make sure the board is the height for you. You should sit with the board somewhere just under your hip height. While ironing make sure your body weight is distributed in a comfortable way and that your back is straight. Your left leg should be turned slightly to the left and hold your stomach muscles in as you do the whole job.
Moving Your Furniture
You should always wait until someone is able to help you. If it’s not too heavy for you to do on your own, never lean down, you should squat or go on one knee. Use both hands and always move slowly.
Lifting a heavy box.
When lifting anything heavy. Never lean over with your legs straight and your back rounded. You should breathe in and as you breathe out bend your knees, picking up the box with both hands. You need to keep your back straight and your stomach muscles pulled in. Breath in and as you breathe out straighten your legs keeping your back straight and your body weight kept in a center line.
Reaching
If you can’t reach the thing you need with feet flat on the floor, it is too high. Never stretch. Grab a small step ladder. Don’t lift a group of heavy items down all at once. It’s best to make a few trips up the ladder in order not to strain.
Lifting from an oven
Make sure to go slowly and use oven mits. Make sure you have a firm grip on the pot and the lid and bend with your knees keeping your back straight at all times.
In Summary
The best way to incorporate a Pilates routine into your housework is to be mindful at all times of your breathing, posture and making certain to not overextend or stretch. By keeping your shoulders back, your back straight, knees slightly bent and breathing in and out using deep breaths, your following the fundamental technique to all Pilates exercises.
