Converting Garage into Bedroom and 4 Tasks you’ll need to include for Success. I’ve mentioned a number of times that as a kid, we lived in a number of different houses that, my parents had bought, specifically to renovate and sell. A couple of those homes, included going up and converting the garage, into a bedroom space. Being the eldest child, the privilege of having this newly built and renovated room, usually belonged to me. Fun because, when it involved converting a garage, my room would be separated from the rest of the bedrooms by a bit of space, and that meant, we could be noisier, when my friends came over to stay overnight.
Living in a room thats been converted from a garage to a bedroom, I can say, I have experience in. Knowing and writing about converting a garage into a bedroom is another thing. For this task , I’d like to introduce you to Ben Vaughn. Ben writes on home remodeling, for Salt Lake City garage door repair. Who better to explain to you :
4 Tasks you’ll need to do when Converting Garage into Bedroom
If you’ve ever looked at your garage and thought about all of the potential in using that space as a living area, your dreams are not wasted. Converting your garage into bedroom is very possible and can be an excellent way to create more living space in your home. For many, converting garages make great guest rooms if you want to give your guests a little more seclusion and privacy.
Before you undertake this kind of project, there are a lot of important planning procedures to consider. Not every garage will be right for converting into a bedroom, but with the right planning, resources, and design vision, converting your garage can be a great way to maximize a space that is so often underused and underestimated.
Clean the Garage-
The first and most obvious step in remodeling anything is to clear out all of your junk. Garages can be especially foul and may require a couple days of labor to clear out depending on how much stuff you’ve been storing. More on garage organization here. The good part about this is that it gives you an excuse to get organized. Taking everything out and throwing away or recycling things you don’t need and organizing what’s left, gets the conversion process off to a good start. While you don’t need to spend too much time cleaning, sweeping and cleaning up debris, it’s still worth doing a quick job as it will give you a blank slate with which to begin.
Organising the overall plan and Replacing the Floor-
Before you go a step further, with your converting garage into bedroom, it’s time to put some pen to paper and make a list of the floor plan for your new room. Now’s also a good time to make a list of tools and equipment that you’ll need, for your project. Make certain to give yourself plenty of time to search for the right manchester, floor rugs, curtains and blinds. (More on decorating an office here).
Garage floors are usually concrete and are probably laden with cracks, oil spots, and every other imaginable type of grime. In order to make your garage into a functional, sanitary living space, you’ll need to replace the floors. Refinishing the concrete may also be an option if the floor is in reasonable condition. When considering a new floor, you should also consider whether or not you want plumbing in the space. Hooking up the garage to existing plumbing lines is a lot of work and can be costly, so decide on that bathroom or sink early in the planning before you finalize the floors.
Deal with the Door-
The garage door is the primary feature that distinguishes a garage. Depending on your design plans for the garage, you may incorporate the existing door into the final conversion or replace it altogether. An dented, weathered aluminum door will probably be better served elsewhere if you’re concerned about the final aesthetics of the room. Carriage doors are a popular option for converted garages since they carry a garage look and the benefit of being weatherproof. They also blend well with a variety of interior designs and open and close easily while letting in a good light through upper windows. Preserving and increasing light is a must when remodeling a garage, so addressing the garage door is an important part of the early conversion process.
Converting garage into bedroom -look up
How high are the ceilings in your garage? The garage frame itself will dictate how much upward conversion you need to do to make your living space comfortable. If the garage is flat on top but freestanding, there is always the possibility of building up or adding height to the garage. Depending on how high you can go, expanding upward can give you the opportunity to put in a small loft or add hanging lights to a vaulted ceiling. If the garage is attached to the house and has living space above it, you may just have to use the available ceiling space the best you can.
